St Gabriels
This was an Edwardian home with striking original features, but lacking in personality and usable family spaces. The brief was to retain, restore and in some cases reinstate period features, while creating a greater sense of space and light and a better connection with the garden. Zoning of family living areas and adult space was also important. We used stronger, darker colours in the north-facing rooms at the front of the house which received little natural light, to create a wonderful sense of moodiness. The rear was opened up with large minimally framed glass doors and a glass roof to let maximum light in and frame verdant garden views. All joinery was made bespoke to perfectly cater to the family’s needs. Original floors upstairs were hand sanded and stained to retain character, while downstairs new natural materials such as French oak chevron, solid brass handles and Welsh slate were chosen for their ability to age beautifully and characterfully.
